From Middle English, from Old English dæġ (“day”), from Proto-Germanic *dagaz (“day”), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰegʰ- (“to burn”). Cognate with West Frisian dei (“day”), Dutch dag (“day”), German Tag (“day”), Swedish dag (“day”), Icelandic dagur (“day”), Sanskrit (dāhas, “heat”).
Not related to Latin dies (from Proto-Indo-European *dyeu- (“to shine”)).
