Belize (formerly British Honduras), is a country in Central America. Belize has a diverse society, composed of many cultures and speaking many languages. Although Kriol and Spanish are spoken among the population, Belize is the only country in Central America where English is the official language. It is bordered by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the south and west, and the Caribbean sea to the east.

With 8,867 square miles (22,960 km²) of territory and 320,000 people (2008 est.), the population density is the lowest in the Central American region and one of the lowest in the world. However, the country's population growth rate, 2.21% (2008 est.), is the highest in the region and one of the highest in the western hemisphere. Belize's abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems contribute to Mesoamerica's designation as a biodiversity hotspot.

Belize is culturally unique among Central American nations. It is the only nation in Central America with a British colonial heritage, and is the only constituent nation of the Commonwealth of Nations in its region. Culturally, Belize considers itself to be Central American but keeps ties to the Caribbean Islands.

How can I call from Belize to the United States using a cell phone?
Q. I have a Verizon cell phone and I've been in Belize for a few days and I'm trying to call my family in the US, but everytime I dial 1-three digit area code- and my phone number, it says this number is invalid. I thought the country code for the US was one? On the cell phone it says roaming and I know it's going to be $1.79 a minute, but I just wanted to quickly call and see how everyone is doing.

A. Hello Green Eyes you must dial the relevant international exit code followed by your national code (1 in the USA) followed by your usual number

Do you need a return ticket to get a visa for Guatamala or Belize?
Q. Hi There, Im planning on travelling through Mexico, Guatamala & Belize in December. Im going to fly into Guat. City and then travel overland back to Mexico City (via Belize) to fly home. I understand however that I might need a return ticket to be allowed into Guatamala & Belize though. Will they accept the fact that I have a ticket departing Mexico as evidence that I dont intend to stay forever? Or will it be a problem at all? How do most airlines handle this issue? Will they let me on board without a return ticket? Many Thanks!

A. My wife and I moved to Belize about a year ago. We found out if you arrive in Belize on bus (ground transportation) then you do not need to return ticket to enter the country. We put it to the test and it worked beautifully. We were about to enter the country and did not need a return ticket. However, if you eventually decide to fly into Belize then you will need a return ticket. Also, as part of the process of moving to Belize, we entered Mexico by plane without a return ticket so I guess it is not required for Mexico. I do not know the details about Guatemala. Take care and have a great trip.

Is it legal to grow marijuana in Belize?
Q. Is it legal to grow marijuana in Belize? Can a person legally grow marijuana in Belize? Where can I get more information on the laws and regulations for growning it?
Asked by Yeah - Sat Jul 19 14:30:00 2008 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Marijuana is illegal in Belize, and speaking generally, the penalties are stiffer than they are here in the US. The police, however, tend to look the other way when the violator is a native. When the violator is an American, you may be looked at as a "revenue source," and you can expect to go to jail unless and until a wealthy family member buys your freedom. You're better off in Jamaica, mon!
