I have to relocate to Central America, do you have an idea of business I can start?
Q. I have to relocate to Central America, Guatemala, I am 36 years old and due to the average salary level that is very low I may have to start my own business. My background is Economy at the university, then I have been working in various import/export and trading companies, currently trader for a U.S. company in Europe. How do get from Central America to South America, skipping Colombia?
Q. Obviously, Colombia is a major obstacle in traveling from central america to south america. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions...BESIDES flying?

A. Perhaps you could explain why you think Colombia is a major obstacle to traveling from Central to South America.I have been traveling & working in Central and South America for many years and have never found Colombia (other than the Darrien Gap) to be an obstacle to travel. Over the years I have made several crossings from Panama to Colombia by boat as well as flying. *The last time was less than three months ago.Feel free to email me if you have any other questions.

What is the difference between Latin America and Central America?
Q. One of my textbooks gave an example and said that in Latin America things are done this way while in Central America they do it another way.

A. That is odd that a text book would say that. Latin America is Mexico and downwards through central and south america including som eof the caribean islands. There are differences in central america cultures and south american cultures but they are both part of latin america.

What form of money is best for traveling through Central America?
Q. I'm going to be going all through Central and maybe a bit of South America, and I'm wondering what would be the best way for carrying all my money. There's cash, travelers cheques, bank card, etc. Are travelers cheques easily cashable? How much of a fee would there be on them? I just don't want to carry a wad of cash around in my pocket. Suggestions? And how much should I bring for a 3-4 month trip? $5-6000?
Asked by Nicole - Tue Mar 24 05:30:15 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Credit Cards are best. Of the majors, only Discover charge does not charge a fee for currency exchange or purchases and cash abroad. Of course you pay the exchange rate and the banks may charge a fee. Most cards can get cash in ATMs but again the local bank may get a service fee. Use the card directly for purchases. You should carry a small amount of cash and travelers checks but not much. You can always use the credit card to get more travelers check while in Central America, buy as you go along.

Q. Would this benefit all those teams in central america or would they not survive? Mexico is a very good team, they are keeping concacaf alive, and well USA sometimes, but mexico yeah..
Asked by Jay D - Fri Jan 25 18:09:00 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In many schools in the United States, Mexico is credited as a Central American country. If you count Mexico as a Central American country it would benefit Mexico because it challenges the players against emerging South American countries like Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Chile and of course; Peru, Argentina, and Brazil. But disregarding Mexico, countries like El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Panama would have more of a difficult time going to a World Cup, besides, if this were to happen the Gold Cup would become very boring if the only teams were U.S, Cuba, Canada and Mexico.

For this test, he also wants us to find out the major exports of all these southern american countries and then Central America. This information is not in our economics book, but I managed to find out the major exports of the southern american countries, but I don't know where/how to find them out for Central America as a whole. Any ideas, or does anyone just know the answer? When I asked my professor in class he blew me off. Thanks...

Q. I want to move from California and Travel trough all Central America and go to Venezuela, can I do it with my car? I need some visa or something to pass trough every country?
Asked by peero70 - Fri Aug 22 14:54:38 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Unless something has changed recently, you can't drive all the way through Panama as there is a 51 mile gap in the rainforest there called the Darien Gap. Driving through Mexico and most Central American nations, requires tourist cards for each country and buying insurance in each country. Plus you will experience the occasional rogue police officer looking for a bribe.

A. Yes, they have international buses. You can take the TICA bus to Managua or to Panama. I don't recommend driving your own car there, but we rented a car in Costa Rica and didn't have any problems.

Will moving more industrial jobs to Central America than China help control immigration?
Q. Obviously, USA workforce is now predominantly white-collar and will continue to be. So will taking industrial jobs to Mexico and Guatemala instead of China aid against immigration? The industrail economy has proven to take a third-world or new country and tranform it with an improved government and economy. Those Central Americans obviously come to America for a better and safer life and to provide for their families, even for the relatives in their home countries. I would be less bad to ship those blue-collar jobs to those countries than China. Would any Chinese actually attempt swimming the Pacific in order to arrive in California?
Asked by 10 inch Puertorrican stick - Sat May 23 21:29:28 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, it won't. The problem is that US's industrial jobs ARE moving to Central America, but in return these countries are losing the same jobs to China. So the problem with the Central American economy is largely due to the fact that they are losing their jobs to China. The only way that they can compete with China is to pay low wages equivalent to China, and doing so will do nothing to control the US immigration from these countries.

A. Check out Santa Teresa/Malpais on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. If you google them on the web you'll get good information. There are plenty of internet cafes with high speed connections, and plenty of places to stay ranging from cheap to expensive. We just got back from 5 weeks down there. My husband is a surfer and he also needed to work via internet... also..great local food..the fish is amazing... It's really best for short boarding--at least it was in Feb/March--not sure about summer. To get from San Jose to Tambor you can fly Sansa Airlines--little 12 seaters that will accept 2 short boards per flight --if you take a bus you can bring a bigger board. This isn't a spot for beginners...(but its not big wave… [cont.]
